Japan's Moon Mission: Touchdown Triumph, but Solar Power Stumbles

In a big news from Tokyo on January 20, Japan proudly joined the club of countries that have landed a spacecraft on the moon. However, there's a little hiccup – the spacecraft's solar panels are not soaking up the sun's rays as expected, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). This comes as part of a mission to showcase some cool "precision" landing technology and give a boost to Japan's space program, which has seen a few bumps in the road.

The spacecraft, called Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM), made its moon landing around 12:20 a.m. local time (1520 GMT Friday). Good news is, it's chatting with Earth again. Bad news – the solar panels are not playing nice, and that might be because they're not facing the right way. Imagine the frustration! "SLIM is running on its trusty battery now, and we're focusing on getting its data back to Earth," said Hitoshi Kuninaka, the boss of JAXA's space lab, at a press conference.

SLIM, also known as the "moon sniper," had an ambitious goal: land within 100 meters (328 feet) of its target. That's like trying to hit a bullseye on the moon! Most spacecraft settle for being accurate within several kilometers. JAXA believes this precise landing technology will be super handy for exploring the bumpy moon poles, where they think they might find useful stuff like oxygen, fuel, and water.

But hold your horses, it's not party time just yet. JAXA needs about a month to check if SLIM aced its high-precision mission. Fingers crossed, space enthusiasts! Japan's SLIM might just be the next big thing in lunar exploration.
