Great news for rail travelers! Starting next week, you can snag discounted tickets, some even up to 50% off, in the eagerly awaited Great British Rail Sale. This week-long event, jointly launched by the Government and the rail industry, kicks off on Tuesday and boasts over a million discounted tickets up for grabs.
Whether you're planning a city break or a peaceful countryside getaway, reduced tickets will be on offer for destinations across England and Wales. Plus, for those looking to venture into Scotland, discounted tickets are available for cross-border trips. The travel window for these discounted journeys is set between January 30 and March 15, with the booking period starting from January 23 to 29.
Act quickly though, as there's a limited number of tickets available, and once they're sold out, there won't be any more up for grabs. In this sale, you might score a ticket from Manchester to Leeds for just £4.30, down from £8.60. Other notable fare reductions include Birmingham to Bristol for £15.30 instead of £30.60 and Leicester to Sheffield for £3.60 to £7.30.
This isn't the first time the Great British Rail Sale has rolled into town; it first hit the tracks in 2022. According to estimates from the Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT), passengers saved around £7 million on rail tickets during the sale's debut, enticing approximately 70,000 adults, who hadn't traveled by train since the pandemic, to hop aboard.
The sale's primary goals are to boost tourism, promote sustainable travel, and connect people, especially during a time when travelers are keen on saving money. Transport Secretary Mark Harper expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the sale, highlighting the success of the previous edition.
Starting from midnight on Tuesday, January 23, sale tickets will become available. The Rail Delivery Group will host a central webpage to help customers find the best deals, and tickets can also be found on all ticket retailer websites. However, it's worth noting that sale tickets won't be available on days when services might be affected by the strikes announced by ASLEF on January 15 and 18, 2024.
So, if you're planning a rail journey between January 30 and March 15, mark your calendars and be ready to grab these discounted tickets before they run out!
