BMW iX1 Review: The Most Enjoyable X1 Experience

Step into the future with BMW’s X1 lineup, where power is diverse – a 123hp petrol, a 150hp diesel, and the star of the show, the all-electric iX1 boasting a robust 313hp. In a world where traditional cars are forced to slim down to meet emission standards, electric vehicles like the iX1 are flexing their muscles, offering impressive power and performance.

The iX1's power dominance over the diesel variant is eye-catching, and its performance claims are attention-grabbing, boasting a 0-100kph time of just 5.6 seconds. Driving this electric wonder is a unique experience, blending smooth take-off in 'Efficiency' mode with a responsive accelerator pedal. The cabin is a quiet sanctuary, insulated from road noise, making it a comfortable ride.

Switching to 'Sport' mode unleashes the iX1’s true potential. With dual electric motors delivering nearly 500Nm of torque, engaging the E-boost mode provides an exhilarating launch, surpassing expectations. While lacking the crispness of its larger electric sibling, the iX EV, it still handles corners with enough grip to keep the ride entertaining.

Yet, the steering could use improvement, lacking feel and consistency in corners, diminishing driver confidence. The iX1 tends to roll in faster corners, despite adaptive dampers, and brake feel falls short of typical BMW standards.

In terms of comfort, the iX1 excels at lower speeds, absorbing bumps in urban settings. However, at higher speeds on uneven roads, the suspension becomes reactive and busy, impacting overall comfort.

Transforming from an internal combustion engine to electric, the iX1 sheds its traditional components for e-motors, batteries, and other electric components. The battery, situated between the axles, provides a real-world range of 323km. Charging options include an 11kW AC charger for a 6.5-hour full charge and DC fast charging for a 10-80 percent charge in about half an hour.

The iX1's interior mirrors the X1's quality and design, featuring well-built materials and a fresh, upscale ambiance. However, rear seat comfort takes a hit due to the electric motor's placement, limiting legroom options.

Features include massaging seats, a panoramic sunroof, Apple CarPlay, and advanced safety features. Priced at Rs 66.9 lakh, the iX1 competes with its diesel counterpart and electric rivals, offering a glimpse into BMW's electric future. Despite a less comfortable rear seat and some handling compromises, the iX1 stands as a unique and capable electric SUV in its class.
